Abstract
This chapter undertakes a preliminary review of bilateral labour migration agreements in the light of human and labour rights. The focus is on labour migration agreements as opposed to other bilateral agreements adopted by States that may impact on migrant workers, such as readmission agreements or agreements coordinating social security arrangements. As discussed below, however, the issue of social security is particularly important for migrant workers. This review is preliminary because the chapter does not purport to analyse systematically a comprehensive range of such agreements, but only select agreements in regions of the world characterized by ‘corridors’ of significant labour migration, and particularly those agreements concluded between countries in Europe and Africa, and between countries in the Middle East and South and Southeast Asia.
