Abstract

Passing through the city prison in Measure for Measure, the disguised Duke Vincentio encounters a new inmate. Maintaining the guise of a friar, the Duke criticizes the prisoner for his reprehensible livelihood:

The evil that thou causest to be done, That is thy means to live. Do thou but think What ‘tis to cram a maw or clothe a back, From such a filthy vice.
