Abstract
“Follow me,” Jesus says in the first eighteen verses of Mark. Later, at the central turning point in Mark’s story, when Jesus predicts his suffering and death, he directs his disciples to take up their cross and “follow me” (8:34). And as Jesus is arrested, the last one to stand up for him in the face of the soldiers is a young man, described in 14:51 as “one of those following him,” fees naked after slipping out of the grasp of the soldiers.
