Abstract

On July 9, 1859 the last installment of Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte (E. D. E. N.) Southworth’s massive serial best seller The Hidden Hand; or, Capitola, the Madcap was published in Robert Bonner’s New York Ledger. It was accompanied by a notice from the author that informed her devoted readers: “Now, dear reader, my pleasant task is ended. Day and night have I wrought at it, cheered by your appreciation and by the goodness of the best publisher… But my strength is not great nor my health good, and this week I go, with my two children, to recruit under the green shadows of old English homes” (2).
