Typologies of Development Education: From Learning About Development to Critical Global Pedagogy

Abstract

In January 2013, the Department for International Development (DF1D) announced a new five year programme for development education in England. This programme whilst having a strong element of learning about development within its key components demonstrated that the discourses and practices around this term are still alive and well. The launch of the programme above all demonstrated the need for continued dialogue and debate as to what the concept means and how it is being interpreted within different educational locations. To some commentators on development education this could be perceived as further tailing to government agendas (Cameron and Fairbrass, 2004; Sclby and Kagawa, 2011) and to others as an opportunity which creates spaces for schools and teachers to promote understanding about development and global themes from their own perspective.
