The EU, UN and Conflict Resolution: Overview

As Chapter 1 explained, while both the EU and UN were faced with the challenges of ethnic conflict after the Cold War, historically the UN was regarded as the main organization responsible for peace and security and the EU was more focused on building an economic union among its members. In this chapter, an overview of the EU and UN’s involvement in conflict resolution and security issues is provided, highlighting the UN’s history of intervention since the 1948 and the evolution of the EU’s role since the 1990s.
