Abstract
This chapter seeks to contribute fresh insights into the discursive representation of the extremely poor in reality TV by offering a case study of the Argentinean docudrama Policías en acción (Police in action — PIA). Extreme poverty is defined in this work by reference to a basic food basket (BFB), the cost of which is determined by the market prices of its items and used to establish the income level that marks the extreme poverty line (Ministerio de Economía de la Provincia de Buenos Aires 2002, pp. 12). The focus on the extremely poor is warranted, both by the postmodern ‘spectacularization’ of poverty in the media (Debord 1994), and by the importance of extreme poverty as a social problem in the Argentine context (Idnovo Carlier 2001; Ortiz & Pardo 2006, 2008; Pardo 2008). PIA regularly includes a number of destitute individuals, some with mental conditions, and portrays them as criminals or drugusers who often engage in violent behaviour towards their family and neighbours. The interest of the show is twofold. On the one hand, it is currently one of the most watched TV programmes in Argentina.2 On the other, it displays certain features of postmodernity, such as a particular conception of heroicity (Forster 2002), the fragmentation of image and discourse, and the use of life stories and ‘the morbid’ as unifying narrative elements (Glusberg 1997).
