Abstract
Burkina Faso (formerly the Republic of Upper Volta and also referred to as Burkinabe or simply as Burkina) is in West Africa. It is one of the most prolific feature-film-producing countries in Africa and, in 1969, established the Festival Panafricain du Cinéma et de la Télévision du Ouagadougou (FESPACO), the largest film festival in sub-Saharan Africa, which takes place biennially in March and boasts more than half a million attendants. FESPACO focuses on African film and filmmakers, and its focus is to encourage and support the expansion of African cinema as a means of expression, education and awareness-raising. Burkina also headquartered the Federation of Panafrican Filmmakers (FEPACI) before it moved its operations to South Africa.
