Advisory: A View into Expanded Teacher Roles
“I don’t talk to Ms. Renato 1,” snarled Omar on a December afternoon. In spite of his distaste for talking with her, Omar got a lot of attention from Ms. Renato, the teacher assigned as his advisor, charged with the responsibility of overseeing her 20 advisees’ academic progress and addressing any obstacles to it. A 10th-grade student, Omar read at a 4th-grade level, had fallen behind on credits toward graduation due to multiple course failures, and, by his own admission, frequently ran afoul of school rules. Omar told me that Ms. Renato, his mother, and Western Preparatory Academy’s principal had met to discuss whether he could even continue at Western.
