Abstract
Jesus of Nazareth was a radical Jew living in a Roman province. He taught,
Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called God’s sons … You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, do not resist injuries, but whoever strikes you on the right cheek turn to him the other as well. And if anyone wants to sue you for your tunic, let him have your robe as well. Love your enemy and pray for your persecutors … Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Matthew 5–6)
