Abstract

Reactions to Fukushima in the UK were, perhaps surprisingly, muted, possibly in part because the government had won at least some support for a large nuclear expansion programme. This was despite earlier widespread opposition. As this chapter describes, the media may have played a role in shaping opinions on nuclear power, but compared with the situation in most of the rest of Europe, the UK position seems to be somewhat anomalous. Nevertheless, whether the UK’s nuclear expansion programme will actually go ahead, given events in Germany and France, remains unclear.
