Abstract

As mentioned in Chapter 2, containerization affected not only the development of shipping, but also other components of the transportation and logistical systems, including ports, and inland transportation. In this light, this chapter discusses how containerization, the restructuring of shipping and the development of global supply chains shaped the evolution and development of ports up until today At the end of the chapter, we briefly discuss Hong Kong and the PRD ports in Southern China, which provide an example of the multi-directional development of ports towards port-focal logistics.
