Abstract

For well over 30 years, Robert Chambers has written a series ofpath-breaking books and articles elaborating the methodology and practical skills required for working with rural people and to understand better their circumstances, mostly by encouraging them to articulate their own needs and situation. This is one of his earliest pieces, arising from two workshops held in IDS in 1978 and 1979, both attended by social scientists and activists with extensive experience in rural situations. It well illustrates his approach: working with others, generalizing from experience, focusing on the doable, drawing practical conclusions and reaching out to poorer people with respect and empathy.
