Abstract
The premise for embarking on my inter-disciplinary research and photographic project, Growing Old for Real, was initially an observation that although researchers and theorists had suggested the appearance of older women was judged more harshly than that of ageing men (Sontag, 1972, pp. 29–38; Barrett, 2005, p. 177; Teuscher and Teuscher, 2007, p. 8), there had been little focus on the effect of image on how women age. More recently, interest in this area of study has increased, and my intention was to create not just an illustration, but an integrated context for critique, where inter-disciplinary theory, face-to-face research interviews and a portfolio of creative photography would play an equal part.
