Abstract

Recent years have seen the significant re-emergence of right-wing extremism in Europe. Fuelled by the economic crisis and rising fears of immigration in a number of countries, together with a rising concern about the Islamification of the West, a number of fascist groups have reappeared or evolved in a different guise. The English Defence League (EDL) is a far-right movement that originated in Luton in the aftermath of Islamist protests against UK soldiers returning from Afghanistan in 2009.
