Abstract
When I was a school teacher and senior manager, my work in schools was often frenetic, exciting and all consuming. Teaching in classrooms and leading and managing school activities can be exhausting. Undertaking the research reported in this book gave me an opportunity to take a step back and to observe, to listen to and to ask questions of those involved in school-based teacher education. I was already aware that working in different subject departments and with different teachers was likely to afford a variety of learning opportunities for student teachers when on their school teaching practice and I wanted to explore why this was so.
