Abstract
Turkey was introduced to liberalist policies in the economy on January 24, 1980. The military coup of 1980, by suppressing social opposition, made it easier for prospective governments to put liberal policies into effect. However, the liberalization of the educational system was to come in the 2000s. Different than previous governments, the Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) governments focused more on social policies, especially on education. The first areas to be affected by neoliberal policies were the curricula and correspondingly the textbooks and auxiliary materials used by sixteen million students in the formal educational system.
