Abstract

‘The dynasty of Naples has ceased to reign.’ So declared Napoleon from Schönbrunn (27 December 1805) where he was basking in the glory of his victory at Austerlitz (2 December, the anniversary of his coronation as Emperor in Notre-Dame a year earlier). His nephew, Louis Napoleon, would honor the auspicious day for his own coup d’état in 1851.
