Excavating the Gendered/ing Dimensions of Male Rape

  • Claire Cohen
Part of the Critical Criminological Perspectives book series (CCRP)

In constructing the ‘truth’ of male rape, what is preserved over the course of its historical narrative is a definitive specialism and expertise — separate to and distinct from rape of the female. Of particular note here is the emergence of enclaves within the academic body that are locating male rape within psychopathology, masculinities and special victim populations. Despite claims to the contrary, such trends persist in marginalizing, segregating and obfuscating this phenomenon. Not only are they key to Othering the male rape victim, they are central in normalizing the female rape victim — gendered particularizations that are key to gendering.
