Abstract

During the last decade, greater cooperation and coordination with Asia has loomed large on the European Union’s (EU’s) political agenda. Central to this agenda has been the strengthening of mutual trade and investment flows with the region and the formation of strategic alliances in Asia. In 2001, the EU updated its Asia strategy and outlined a strategic framework in which six key priority areas were identified: security, economics, development, law, environmental concerns and social awareness (EU, 2001).
