Abstract

The end of the war brought to Shanghai a new occupying force. Beginning in September 1945, thousands of U.S. troops arrived, changing the atmosphere and the economy. In high spirits after their long march to victory, the American military brought Army rations and CARE packages, candy and jobs, and a way of life that seemed to promise freedom and equality. Their spending revived refugee businesses. The U.S. military hired about 1,500 refugees in a wide variety of jobs at high pay.
