Abstract
In 1830, the Church of Christ was organised in New York under the leadership of Joseph Smith (1805–44) as a reaction1 to American religious pluralism (Hill, 1989) and as a return to primitive Christianity: Smith claimed to have restored the ‘only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth’2 in response to a religious awakening which provoked ‘stir’ and ‘confusion’3 due to denominational competition in a very pluralistic religious market. Because of its belief in the Book of Mormon, the Church was referred to as the ‘Mormon Church’ and its members as ‘Mormons’, even though its official name became the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1838.
