Abstract
Early this century the German sociologist Werner Sombart visited the United States in his quest for the secret of American classlessness. Socialist aspirations, he tersely concluded, had run aground on a universal enjoyment of ‘roast beef and apple pie’ (Sombart, 1976: 126). At a time when class schism was rife throughout Europe, widespread social contentment had averted a similar fate befalling the United States.
