Abstract

This book has sought to improve understanding of one of the most unusual trajectories ever followed by a political party in a Western democracy. Contrary to deterministic interpretations of the UCD’s collapse centred on its ideological heterogeneity, I have set out to explore the ways in which changes in the balance of power within the party, and developments outside it, arrested its process of institutionalisation and created the conditions for its collapse. The account presented here has been built around an analytical framework which aims to generate explanations for political actors’ decisions to enter political organisations and to ‘exit’ from them.
