Prostitution and Globalization: Notes on a Feminist Debate

A discussion of prostitution in the context of the current phase of globalization is important for many reasons. First, globalization has produced broad changes in the organization of prostitution, providing crucial mirrors for the effects of globalization on the social position of women and the reproduction of the workforce. Second, prostitution is a key example of ‘unprotected work’, as defined in this volume. Thus it is a paradigmatic case for understanding how globalization is affecting the growing number of workers who are excluded from contractual relations and of the ways in which they intervene in the shaping of the world economy and contemporary political debates.
