Abstract

This chapter examines what types of resources the PSPD needed for its shareholder activism and how it mobilized them. The first section identifies three ‘internal’ resources, without which the PEC1 could not have maintained itself. They are expertise, leadership and funds. The second section investigates two ‘external’ resources, that is, the information of the target firms and the support of the shareholders, which the PSPD required in order to wage its shareholder activism. We can identify five different groups of shareholders to which the PSPD can turn: (1) PSPD members; (2) individual shareholders; (3) domestic institutional investors; (4) trade unions; and (5) foreign institutional investors. We will discuss the respective significance of each group within PSPD shareholder activism.2
