Abstract
The previous chapter documented the attempt to create a ‘model’ of decision making using the constituent choice ‘types’ and ‘stages’ that emerged during the analysis of the student interviews. Chapters 5 and 6 examine the reasons students gave when asked why they were taking a particular course of action. Because the nature of the students’ accounts and the choices they faced were different in the two transitions that were studied, the analytic categories that were used are different in both years. Whilst in Year 11 the analysis is divided into an examination of ‘factors’ and ‘rationales’, the analysis of Year 9 choices is uni-dimensional.
