Abstract
The proliferation of Arab-Islamic violence, and its suicidal varieties in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century has been an unexpected and not fully understood development. It has been legitimated by both clear-cut political objectives and highly irrational beliefs in personal salvation attendant upon spectacular acts terrorism often directed against noncombatants.
