Abstract

The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) got off to a bad start in November 1973. A ragtag collection of leftist activists, Vietnam vets, and escaped convicts, the SLA wanted to make a splash by killing some authoritarian figure. A careless reading of a news clipping pointed them to Oakland’s Superintendent of Schools, Marcus Foster, and they ambushed and killed him with eight bullets dipped in cyanide. But Foster was actually a beloved progressive, and everyone condemned the action, even other radicals.
