Abstract

This chapter studies the restructuring of the Chinese automotive industry since the 1980s and the impact of FDI on this ongoing process. The main focus is the evaluation of the role of European MNEs in the development of Chinese automotive assembly and parts manufacturing,1 especially in the passenger car industry. The first section provides an analytical framework for assessing the dynamic interactions between the government’s sectoral policy and the strategic setting of automotive MNEs in different stages of the industrial restructuring, in particular with regard to the creation of local added value and the development of global competitiveness. In the second section, the restructuring process of the Chinese automotive industry is analysed. This chronological overview is designed to highlight the evolution of the Chinese government’s sectoral policy and its impact on the structure and development pattern of the industry. In the third section, the entry and expansion path of foreign automotive manufacturers and automotive part and component producers in the Chinese automotive industry, especially those from the EU, is discussed against the background of the industrial restructuring process.
