Abstract
In this chapter I will explain a little more about Myrtle Vale, which is the particular, unique, local context for this research, and the setting in which the young people in this book will make their lives. Like some other localized studies, this research seems to be exploring the site of a global-local paradox. Myrtle Vale is as unique in geographical setting, history, economy, and culture as any other town. At the same time, over the past decade I have been surprised that as I describe this very local research to people in UK, Europe and Asia, Pacific and the Americas, they have recognized the patterns all too well.
