Authority in Multilevel Parties: A Principal-Agent Framework and Cases from Germany and Spain

  • Pieter van Houten

Abstract

Questions about authority relations in political parties operating at several levels of government are among the central concerns of this volume and of the larger research agenda on territorial party politics. These questions are manifold. For example, where does authority reside in such parties? Does authority vary by issue and context? How is authority exercised? To what extent do national party leaders control and influence the actions of party actors at the subnational level?
