Abstract

Let us return to the overall question with which I began this book: what does it mean to be a critical reader in a foreign language? I noted at the outset that I aimed for a two-layered kind of analysis: the analysis of texts, and the analysis of the classroom interaction in which students critique text. Within the classroom, I wanted to explore the materials and procedures which might promote critical reading, to embrace not just the approach to specific texts but, eventually, ways of relating those readings to wider social and cultural practices.
