One way to pass through your mind’s window into Smith’s theory of the impartial spectator is to start with a poem by Robert Burns:
‘O wad some Pow’r the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
An’ foolish notion;’1
