God Talk

Abstract

The problem with religious language is that we are dealing with a topic which is far above our concepts and understanding. Hence some philosophers have argued that God talk is nonsense, but others, on the basis of analogy, metaphor, symbols, models, myth, and story, assert that we can discuss the subject. The use and validity of such language will be considered and comparison made with the scientific. We will continue to argue that the methods of science and religion do overlap at times since the latter is concerned with the world and us. We have seen this in the last chapter when thinking not only of revealed theology but natural theology. There will also be a consideration of those religious thinkers who argue that religious language can refer to God and those who limit it to religious practice.
