Abstract
Turkey, Cyprus and Malta all demonstrate a close and long-standing relationship with the European Union (EU) that has culminated in each applying for full EU membership, mostly so as to gain improved access to EU’s export and labour markets, which, with possible financial assistance, could accelerate their economic development. The Mediterranean region not only has political and strategic interest for the EU; it also provides privileged access (especially in the case of Turkey, with a market of 62 million people) to protected markets.
