Changing Conceptions of Multiculturalism

Abstract

‘Multiculturalism’ has been used to describe a wide range of circumstances and is understood and interpreted in a number of different ways. As a result, it no longer has any real meaning, other than at a very generalised level and in political terms. This chapter attempts to explain some of the various ways in which the term has been used and also suggests some new interpretations of ‘difference’ within modern multicultural democracies.
