Abstract
American soldiers readily lent missionaries a helping hand in restoring Christian faith and reiterating the scientific gospel of hygiene and health. At the same time, however, they realized that the persistent stagnancy, poverty, and moral degradation of Asian and Pacific societies begged for increased Western intervention and would require large-scale tutelage for quite some time to come.
