Abstract

The mapping of source concepts of the (HUMAN) BODY onto sociopolitical INSTITUTIONS has had a long tradition in political discourse and thought, dating back to antiquity and permutating over the centuries:

(1) Originating as an expression of the unity of the Greek polis, it became in turn an impodrtant concept in the arsenal of the Stoic philosophers, Christian theologians, and spokesmen for the rising monarchies of the late medieval Europe. […] The English Renaissance witnessed the final flourishing of the idea of the body politic, while at the same time it produced […] challenges to the anthropomorphic view of the universe […]. (Hale 1971: 47)
