The Nature of Law in an Anarchical Society

  • Chapter
The Anarchical Society in a Globalized World

Abstract

After briefly summarizing Bull’s central arguments about international law, I consider his perspective in the context of four issues relating to the contemporary world. These issues, all of which are at least touched upon in The Anarchical Society, are as follows:

  1. 1.

The relationship between the balance of power and international law.

  2. 2.

    The legalization of international relations.

  3. 3.

Globalization and the related concept of cosmopolitanism.

  4. 4.

    Neo-medievalism.
