Abstract

At this point it seems appropriate to say a few words on the ‘reality’ or rather tangible presence of the entity called civilization (as used in the plural). As we are not dealing with individuals but with large-scale human collectives, the question may arise whether or to what extent these huge collectives, which last for a succession of generations, are ‘real’ phenomena or merely our theoretical constructs.
