Abstract

With most of the major international problems relating to the WGF having been more or less solved, the principal focus of the withdrawal turned to domestic issues within the USSR. The returning troops came back to a very different country than even just a few years ago. Severe economic and nationality problems gripped the USSR, while new groups voiced their demands for change. These calls were from every part of the political spectrum, from even more radical reformers to hardline communists and nationalists who were seeking to block the more liberal aspects of Gorbachev’s reforms.
