Abstract
The Chinese director of a non-profit development organisation leaned back in a comfortable chair. We had not met before, but had been introduced by former colleagues from the 1990s. The director listened politely, then pulled out a cell phone and began searching for contacts. ‘When you go to Beijing, you should talk to [this person]. And [this professor]. You can say that I recommended you. You can speak Chinese, right?’
‘Now who do I know who might be able to help you?’
