Abstract
In examining how the Chinese employment model evolved, we now focus on the changes in labour—management relations in recent decades. The way in which organized labour in the People’s Republic of China fits into existing typologies in both Western and communist societies must first be set out, as well as their effectiveness in representing workers’ interests. The Chinese ‘proletariat’ were, after all, ‘masters of the country’ (guojia zhuren) and the ‘leading class’ (lingdao jieji).
