The Transition Orthodoxy and its Problems

Abstract

The rise and decline of communism was compressed into a relatively brief period of time, essentially from 1917 to 1989. Looking back at the literature on the communist countries, it is striking how little attention was devoted to the problems of the transition away from the command economic system or the totalitarian political structure. To a considerable degree this was a product of the ideological confrontation between the two systems.
