Abstract

The main character in Soseki’s novel Sorekara (meaning ‘and then …’) seems strongly to embody the author’s concept of Western individualism. We may well imagine that Soseki enjoyed his experience of this individualism when in England from 1900–1903, when he went as a Japanese intellectual and academic to study in London on research leave. After his return to Japan he taught English literature as a Professor at Tokyo University.
