Abstract
Digitisation of all forms of information and the growth in reach and functionality of the internet are producing dramatic changes in the generation, management, and dissemination of knowledge. New modes of codification such as simulation and web-centered collaborations advance the generation, use, and reuse of knowledge. These changes are especially visible in the sciences where computers are used to extract insights from large volumes of data, and teams of researchers from around the world use internet-based facilities to communicate and work together.
Earlier versions of this chapter were presented at the DRUID (Danish Research unit for Industrial Dynamics) summer conference in Denmark in June 2002 and the American Political Science Association Annual Meeting, Boston, Massachusetts, August 2002.
