Abstract

In response to the adverse and in his view sometimes irrelevant criticisms that appeared in early reviews of The Rise of the Novel, Ian Watt wrote his own review, in which he identifies what he sees as the shortcomings of his famous book and singles out his ‘grossest substantive failure of execution’:
