Abstract
If there were any doubts about Ayatollah Khomeini’s grandiose ambitions, both spiritual and territorial, they should have disappeared by January 1985, when it was revealed (The Times) that the exiled National Iranian Resistance Movement (NIRM), led by Shahpour Bakhtiar, had acquired certain documents relating to an important meeting that had been held in Tehran on 28 May 1984 to discuss a project that was said to have been previously approved by Khomeini without amendment or alternation. Chaired by Ayatollah Mohammed Khatani, minister of Islamic guidance, the meeting was attended by certain ministers, senior military commanders, department Heads and Ayatollah Bakr Hakim, leader of the exiled ‘Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution for Iraq’, which was sponsored by the Tehran government.
