Abstract
This chapter initially provides background information about drugs and how they have been used in sport. A short description is then given of the evolution of doping control and the testing procedures which have been adopted by sporting authorities. The remainder of the chapter explores various issues that have arisen in relation to doping in sport. For example, the many pressures that are placed on élite performers are examined, along with arguments put forward to legalise drug taking in sport.
Unless something is done soon international sport will be a competition between circus freaks manipulated by international chemists. (Lawson, cited in Beashel and Taylor, 1986, p. 84)
